PROPOSITION STATEMENTS

The subject of the debate is called a proposition statement or resolution and always starts with the words:

Be it resolved that: ______.”

The affirmative team members are always in favor of the proposition and for the change, while the negative team members are against the proposition and therefore     against the change.

Examples:

  • Be it resolved that:  the five day school week be abolished and replaced with a four day school week,    extending the school day by eighty minutes.
  • Be it resolved that:  animals not be used for cosmetic research testing.
  • Be it resolved that: the sale of animal fur/pelts for the purpose of clothing be deemed illegal.

Debate format

This Debating Forum includes the following three parts:

REMINDERS

A) A debater must rise and give a complimentary introduction. Example: “Madame Speaker, Honorable Judges, esteemed classmates, and worthy opponents, I am speaking on behalf of the negative side…

B) Speak in an audible, expressive, informative, accurate and convincing manner

C) Be polite and courteous.
D) Listen attentively.
E) Be respectful and supportive of your peers.
F) Avoid inappropriate noises.
G) Speak only when recognized by the moderator.
H) Allow others to express their opinions; do not monopolize the debate.
I) Use grammatically correct language.

L) At the conclusion of the debate, all teams should rise and meet to thank each other.

M) Only one team will win this debate. The winning team will:

-have a solid background regarding all material

-have plenty of evidence to back up claims

-use teamwork to ensure all group members the important concepts behind specific positions
