Stereotypes

The graphic novel American Born Chinese is full of different stereotypes.

A stereotype is (according to the Mac dictionary):

stereotype |ˈsterēəˌtīp; ˈsti(ə)r-| noun
1 a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing : the stereotype of the woman as the carer | sexual and racial stereotypes.

In pairs, come up with a long list of different stereotypes.  Include ones you find about people all over the world, people in China, people in your house and people at school.

You can find examples here in Wikipedia.  It may load slowly though.

We will list what you come up with here.

Assignment:

  • Come up with a five or more panel  cartoon of stereotypes similar to what you found in the ABC book.  Post it on your blog with an analysis of 250 words or more.
    • What is a stereotype?
    • What is the stereotype that you are presenting?  Explain.
    • Why is it a stereotype?
    • Are there every actual truths in stereotypes?  Why or why not?
    • Why do people create stereotypes?
