Audio Cuts (L and J)

Audio cuts are very subtle yet really helpful for your story.  An audio cut is when we hear the sound before the scene begins OR after it begins.

Cross Cutting

The Cross Cut, sometimes called parallel editing, is action that is happening in two different places, but at the same time. It involved two different film clips that you cut back and forth from.

Match Cuts

Match Cuts blend one scene into another.  They can be a little bit tricky to do as they look like jump cuts sometimes.  A match cut is when you transition between scenes, but the next scene matches the previous scene with

Cutting on Action

Cutting on action “Cutting on action or matching on action refers to film editing and video editing techniques where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action."

Cutaway

Cutaway shots literally cut away to another scene and then back. For example: “OMG that train is going to run you over.” You then cut to the scene of a train coming, then back to the actor with a scared look on their face.

Smash Cut

Smash cut is a cut to another scene that really disrupts the flow of the video. Often used for comedy, horror, dramatic action.

Jump Cut

Jump cuts are shot from the same scene, but with some movement in between each scene. It gives the feeling of moving forward in time.
